Uddiyan Bandha

Uddiyana Bandha: understanding the abdominal lock

Uddiyana Bandha is a traditional yoga technique involving the abdomen and breath. It differs from Mula Bandha, which refers to pelvic-floor engagement in many yoga descriptions.

Why written instructions are limited

The technique is described differently in different schools and may include breath retention. Incorrect or forceful practice can cause discomfort, so a short online description is not enough to teach it safely.

Approach with care

Learn from a qualified instructor who can demonstrate the method and help determine whether it is appropriate for you. Do not strain, compete, or hold your breath beyond your comfort.

Choose a gentler alternative

If your goal is relaxation, try comfortable breathing without breath retention or abdominal locking.

Safety

Seek medical advice before attempting breath-retention practices if you are pregnant or have heart, blood-pressure, abdominal, digestive, or other significant medical concerns.

This is general educational information, not individual medical advice.
