Apaan Vayu Mudra: traditional practice, not emergency treatment
Apaan Vayu Mudra is a gesture found in some traditional yoga writing. Descriptions that say it can save a life or help during a heart attack should not be taken as medical evidence.
How it is commonly described
Traditional instructions vary, but often involve positioning the index finger near the thumb and bringing the thumb toward the middle and ring fingertips. Use only gentle contact if you choose to try it while well.
Do not use it for chest pain
A hand gesture has not been shown to reverse a heart attack or safely treat acute chest symptoms. Chest pain can have serious causes and needs prompt assessment.
Safer response
If a person has possible heart-attack symptoms, contact emergency services immediately, keep them at rest, and follow professional instructions. Do not wait to see whether a gesture helps.
Safety and limits
This practice is optional and should never replace emergency care or a clinician’s treatment recommendations.
