Mukha Dhouti: a traditional yoga breathing exercise
Mukha Dhouti is traditionally described as a cleansing-oriented breathing technique. A safer general description is to maintain a steady posture, relax the face and shoulders, and breathe without competition or excessive effort.
Use a controlled exhalation through the mouth at a level that remains comfortable. There is no need to forcefully empty the lungs or repeat the exercise many times.
When to stop: End the exercise if it causes light-headedness, chest discomfort, weakness, or unusual breathlessness. It should not be used to manage an asthma attack or another medical emergency. If you have a medical condition, ask a qualified clinician whether this type of breathing exercise is suitable for you.
