NETI KRIYA

Neti is of several types, but major ones are: Sutra Neti and jal neti.

Sutra Neti
The cotton thread for Sutra Neti can be obtained from any yogashrama. This is to be done in the morning after brushing teeth.
Sit down on your feet and raise your neck a little. Wet the cotton thread and put the waxed-end in that nostril through which the breath is passing . When it reaches the throat, catch it with your third and fourth fingers and bring out through your mouth. repeat this process with the second nostril also. After practising this for a few days rub it giving a few jerks by holding the two edges of the thread from the nostril and the mouth. Take it out through your mouth. Take care to wash the thread properly after use. So that no impurity remains.
Neti purifies and cleans the skull(forehead) and confers heavenly insight on the practiser. It drives away the diseases that appears on the joints of chest and eyes.\

Advantages: Neti cleans the skull, improves eyesight, protects the body from the diseases of ear, nose and throat; from cold, headache and deafness of the ear and from teh undesirable growth of nasal bone.
If the rubbing of the thread inside the nose causes any burning sensation or if blood oozes out of the nose, put a few drops of ghee in both the nostrils. Usually one should also put a few drops of ghee in the nostrils before going to bed at night , and inhale them in. This practice is very useful.

Jal Neti
A bowl or pot or lota with a pipe like opening is used for this kriya (please see picture). Dissolve some salt in lukewarm water and fill the pot with this water. Raise the nostril that is active at the time of breathing towards one side and fit the pope's mouth into it. Open the mouth and start breathing through it. Now tilt the pot gradually in such a manner that the water goes inside the nostril. The water should come out through the second nostril as it is at a lower level. Now repeat this process by putting the pipe in the second nostril.

Caution :When doing it, never use your nose for breathing.

Bhastrika pranayama is a must after Jal Neti Look Bhastika pranayama in my different types of pranayama post. To do this bow a little forward and move the neck right and left up and down . and then do Bhastrika. So that the nose gets completely clean and dry . No trace of water should be allowed to remain inside the nostrils .

After you have mastered this technique completely , you can practice drinking water or milk through the nose. Drinking of milk or water through the nose has specific advantages. It cures all brain ailments and sharpens the intellect. The ailments of eyes ears, nose, and throat are cured and sleeplessness removed . It also improves the eye sight.
